One Man and His Bike October 5.10.02 John has now been travelling for one week! He spent his first night in a campsite outside Derby and then Bedford. On Tuesday he went to The Islamic Republic of Mauritania Embassy in London where he obtained his Visa. He would like to thank Yousuf, the Ambassador, for all his help. Travelling with his friend Reg, from Kellogg's, they eventually crossed the Channel at Dover, after unsuccessfully attempting to travel from Folkstone –a port that has been closed for 18 months! After a bottle of Vodka and fish ‘n’ chips, Reg returned to England and John continued through France. John set up camp in a garden on the outskirts of Paris and received breakfast in bed from the wife – coffee and croissant! 6.10.02 John has arrived in Paris where he will be meeting up with a colleague from Kellogg’s France. 21.10.02 First of all, we would
like to apologise for the delay in updating the website.
Unfortunately our computer broke and we had to wait for a man to
come and fix it. We are now up and running again! Having left Paris, (see
photographs taken by Jacques on page 6) John headed south towards Lyon.
The weather was against him – it was raining continually and John was
cycling into a head wind. He took the opportunity to dry out at a local
motel and consequently was eaten alive by bed bugs! Due to adverse weather
conditions, John changed his route and cycled west towards Narbonne. He
was unaware that the Camargue had been hit by torrential flooding that had
devastated the land – bringing down bridges and obliterating roads. Unfortunately, on the
outskirts of Narbonne, John’s bike broke. To make matters worse, it was
a Sunday and all shops were closed. He spent the day pushing his bike to a
Decathalon store where he set up camp in the car park! All is now well and John is back on track heading for Perpignan. 26.10.02
Having spent
a night camping in Perpignan on the cliffs overlooking Spain, John is now
North of Barcelona. 30.10.02 Today, John
visited Jaume Valls at the Kellogg's Spanish plant. He enjoyed his host's
hospitality - especially the lunch, quite a novelty to sit on a chair! 31.10.02 John is now staying at a campsite by the sea at Valencia. He is making good progress, thanks to a strong tailwind!
